“It’s going to be rough”

Posted on June 10, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing |

The quote above is from the surgeon that did Punk’s tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.  He laid that prophecy on me a few weeks before her surgery.  I was somewhat in a state of disbelief thinking the younger the child, the easier it would be.  Unfortunately he was right, and I was wrong.  It’s been rough.

Punk moans and whimpers and kicks while she sleeps because her throat hurts.   The pain meds taste terrible, so it’s a battle to get her to take them, and when she does, they only last 2 hours — not the 4-6 they should.   We REALLY hope today was the turning point because she does seem to be a little better and eating more without prompting.

We’re trying to take all this in stride.  There is an end in sight and there are parents out there dealing with things that are a lot worse.  So, a few more sleepless nights and then no more tonsillitis — probably a good enough trade.  And she is young enough that she won’t remember what we put her through!

I remember having my tonsils out when I was five. I don’t care what anybody says….it isn’t worth all the ice cream in the world. I remember the Oakland hospital, and the days after the surgery. Ouch!!

It could have been worse – you could have been 21, got an infection in your salivary gland and not been able to eat for more than 2 weeks! She seems to be over it now and it is comforting to know that her next cold won’t end up in tonsillitis.
