Family Fun

Posted on July 31, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, Product Reviews, The Parenting Thing, Things I Love | Tags: , , |

We struggle to find games that are easy enough for Punk to join, fun enough for ChickenFried, and frankly the adults.   While on our little jaunt to Sioux Falls we hit the gift shop at the Arts & Sciences Museum and found a fun old/new game perfect for everyone.  Don’t groan when I say this — Charades for Kids.  Yeah, I know …. charades …. you might picture a bunch of old people drinking white wine with nothing better to do on a Sat night (oh wait, that could be us?).  But really, it’s fun.

The cards are just drawings, so Punk can figure some out for herself.  When she drew the “dog” card, she got on all fours and panted.  We knew exactly what it was.   ChickenFried is pretty good at both acting things out and guessing.  The kids beg to play it every night.

We got the travel version, which is nice because you can just play four cards each and then you’re done … no one wins or loses kind of thing.   Granted, there aren’t a lot of cards so we’ll have to start making up our own one of these nights, but it was $10 well spent nonetheless.

New Meme Fun From Mimi

Posted on July 28, 2009. Filed under: Meme Fun, Mommy Moments |

I was asked to play along in another meme, presumably because I’m so witty and fun.  But, I forgot last week, so I’m probably in the dungeon.  I’m going to pretend I’m not and play anyway.  That’s kind of how life works, right?

This meme is brought to you from Mimi at The Queen’s Meme.   You can tell how fun this is going to be already.  Check out her site and play along.

The Queen’s Meme No. 3 is called the Culinary Meme. Contrary to popular belief, the Queen has been known to accidentally cook something edible. Although I’ve given the gift of food poisoning to a boyfriend or two in the past, I actually made the food you see here. Don’t ask me how because I could never do it again. I made up the recipe and lived to tell it. I’ll bet there are some good cooks out in the blogosphere. Show us your saucy side. Flip a hot burger and smooch on a mushroom. Strap on a sweet little apron with 3-inch heels (please don’t do this guys) and pre-heat to perfection. I’m getting hungry now. How ’bout you? I can’t wait to read your savory concoctions.
Dinner is at eight.

The Cooking Meme (What Is The Meaning of Thyme and Other Deep Questions)

1. If you could put thyme in a bottle, what is the first thing that you’d like to do?

I have a bottle of Thyme.  I haven’t used it in five years.  Perhaps I should just throw it away?

2. Do eggs really crack or do they merely have a nervous breakdown?

I think that thoroughly depends on who is holding them.

egg cartoons, egg cartoon, egg picture, egg pictures, egg image, egg images, egg illustration, egg illustrations

3. Why are you whipping the butter? What did it ever do to you?

Have you seen my thighs lately?
4. Do your spoons spoon in the drawer? Have you ever noticed? And more importantly, if wooden spoons spoon do they get splinters?

Yes, but according to Martha Stewart they should not spoon in the dishwasher or yucky things will be stuck between them.   Hmmmm, sounds familiar.

5. You hear: “Dumpling, my Dumpling, come hither.” The candles are lit, the fondue is dipping, the Godiva is pouring, the scallions are steaming and the music is playing…..but wait, the windows are open.
Why did you close them?

Dumpling … is that a reference to my thighs again.  Not only are the windows now closed, so is the door.

6. Do you need a recipe to cook or are you a bohemian chef? Show us your reckless and wild side in the kitchen. Don’t have one? Here’s a recipe I made just for you: You will need a spatula, a whisk, a gallon of Chardonnay, a banana and a rump roast. What is the name of your dish?

I need Scwans to cook.  Really, it’s the factor of time.  I don’t have enough to actually cook something from scratch.    I’m glad you do.  gulp gulp gulp.  Are you sppsued to cook rumplroast?  gulp gulp gulp gulp.  Ths s sme good vino.  gulp gulp gulp gulp.  Who’s cookin?  What was the question?

7. After dinner, the dishes are so dirty that the dishwasher refuses to wash them.
What did they say to get in hot water?

They got caught spooning with the forks.

8. Is your pot black?

Black is the new black.

9. What is the sexiest spice or condiment in your cabinet? What makes it so?

The Clabber Girl.  She offers double acting backing soda.

10. How much crock is really in your crock pot?

Need you ask?

Really – You Just Said That?

Posted on July 27, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing |

Punk and I made a run to the bank Sat am to deposit some checks (sorry it took us so long Mom).   The banker was ‘in’ so Punk and I stopped in to see how his summer was going.  Then Punk felt the need to make an announcement: “I go poopy in the potty.”  Yep.

I suppose it’s our own fault because we made such a big deal out of it …. because it took her so darn long.   I expected her to tell certain people … but the banker?  Thank goodness he has kids so he understood.  I’m just thankful we weren’t out in the middle of the bank when she made her announcement.

Saturday 9 Fast Car

Posted on July 26, 2009. Filed under: Meme Fun, Mommy Moments | Tags: , , |

Ok – so I’m a day late ….. sorry.  It’s been a little busy around here!

[tracey.jpg]1. What’s the furthest trip you’ve taken by automobile?

I have been coast to coast via automobile.  Since my grandparents did most of the driving, I doubt it was all that fast.  Now me on the other hand…

2. What’s the worst pick up line you’ve ever received?
“Have you tried the rasberry lemonade?  It’s really good.”  Seriously.

3. What’s the best pick up line you’ve gotten?

I don’t think this counts since we were both about 7 … but a kid told me he thought I was prettier than Farrah Fawcett.

4. What was the last gift that you received?

Hmmmm – probably my mp3 player for Mother’s Day.

5. What was the last gift that you gave someone?

BigD’s b-day was this week.  I gave him a bottle of Evan Williams single barrel.  Apparently it’s pretty good.

6. Tell us about the last time you cried.

A friend’s Mom’s funeral a couple of weeks ago.   I did ok until I saw her walking in with her dad looking at the casket.

7. Tell us about the last time you laughed uncontrollably.

Friday night with a friend telling her about the time I hit a pole with BigD’s new truck and I tried to hide it, but he totally nailed me on it.

8. Do you suffer road rage? What are your thoughts on it?

I do get irritated iwth other drivers, especially when they are stupid.  And seriously women out there, most of you are worse drivers than men.  Last week I went to pass a guy on our little country highway.  In his defense, he was going the speed limit of 60 …. right on the nose.  But I knew as soon as he hit the hills he’d drop down to 40 so I didn’t want to be behind him.   I passed him very nicely giving lots of room, signaling, etc.  As I got up by him he’s gesturing that he’s doing the speed limit and why am I passing.  Um, because I don’t want to be behind you anymore?  Get over it.

9. What’s one of your favorite movie quotes?

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Boys Vs Girls

Posted on July 22, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: , |

ChickenFried is a 7-year old boy … and he is all boy (except when he helps Punk dress her disney princesses).

Punk is a 3-year old girl … and she is all girl (except for the climbing rocks, trees – basically whatever she can).

We’re out at dinner last night at Famous Dave’s.  Punk graciously hands out at least two paper towels to each person from the roll.  We have to stop her there.   ChickenFried immediately crumples his, it lands on the floor, and he wipes his mouth with it (ok – I didn’t see that last part, but I imagine that’s what happened).

Punk can’t wait to open that strange smelly wipe and use it.  We have to remind ChickenFried to use it and then tell him to wipe more becuase he has stored some of his dinner around his mouth for later.

BigD has to go out the take-out exit so he can swindle more wipes for Punk because she likes them so much.  ChickenFried thinks she’s nuts.  That’s what shirt sleeves are for (if he remembers).

Chasing Picture Perfection – Photo Assignment

Posted on July 20, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments | Tags: , , , |

I’m playing along  in a new blog photo assignment hosted by my friend Stacie at Chasing Picture Perfection.   Every two weeks, a new photo challenge will be posted.  This assignment is to create a photo with shallow depth of field (sharp forefront/subject and blurred background).   Stop in and play along – you still have a few days to get this assignment done.  If you don’t have a blog, you can use one of the social networking sites,  or send to Stacie and she’ll post it for you!

I like this photo because of the color pop you get from the flowers, and I do think it’s one of my best shallow depth of field photos.

Saturday 9 – Heatwave

Posted on July 18, 2009. Filed under: Meme Fun, Mommy Moments | Tags: , |

[heatwave_-_candles.jpg]1. It’s July. How has the weather been where you are?

A mixed bag – July 4th was so cool we had a bonfire (normally it’s a heat index of over 100).  We had a record low of 53 the other night.  But no humidity so it’s been awesome.
2. What is the best way for you to beat the heat?

Go inside an airconditioned house!  We also beg our way up to the neighbors pool sometimes.

3. “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” Do you buy that?

Been in Nebraska/Iowa/Florida on a day that’s 90, but the heat index is over 100.  Yeah, I buy it.  I’d take dry heat any day.

4. Do you like hot tubs or saunas?

Not usually.  Humidity again.  See a pattern?

5. What’s the hottest you’ve ever been?
Sr Cheerleading Captain….?   Oh, you mean heat.  Pick any day in August around here and you’ve got it.

6. How many times do you hit the beach in the summer?

I’m in a land-locked state.  Yeah – we have a few fake beaches …. but they are disgusting.  We just hit the pool.

7. When you were a kid, what did you do in the summer?

Rode my bike, all day long, everywhere.

8. Surfing. Have you ever gotten on a surfboard? Body surf?
No – The thought of drowning isn’t all that appealing.

9. What’s your favorite summer song?

Hot summer nights…….storm clouds in the air… eyes are a little heavy – (New Girl Now)  Ok, maybe not my favorite, but I’m in a hurry and it’s the one that came to mind.

Stuff You Didn’t Know Existed

Posted on July 16, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, Web World | Tags: , , |

Don’t ask me how I came across this link – extreme boredom maybe?? Regardless, even my inner geekiness had never seen some of this stuff so I thought I would share.

Warning – I’m guessing the site “” is run by 20-something boys who still think swearing for swearing sake is funny. (Ok – some of it is!). But if you can get passed that, it is some pretty interesting stuff. If you don’t want to, google the following and see what you get:

ferrofluids1. Ferrofluids:  a liquid containing iron that reacts to a magnetic field.    Check out this video at You Tube:

2. Aerogel: a manufactured material with the lowest density of any known solid.  Check out this video at You Tube:

The article has other things like transparent aluminum and carbon nanotubes, but I thought the above were the coolest.

Say It With Me – Quasquicentennial

Posted on July 14, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: , , , |

bannerWe spent last weekend celebrating my hometown, Bancroft Nebraska’s Quasquicentennial.  Quasquicentennial – a 125th anniversary.  Ok, so I never actually said that word — we just called it Q125!

The town did a great job pulling everything together.  There were a ton of activities beginning Friday.  My Mom was in charge of opening ceremonies.  There was a slight snafu with the Lt Governor being a bit late but it came out just fine.

My parent’s business, Northeast Tractor Salvage, sponsored the tractor show.  Over 100 tractors showed up which was a great turn out.

ChickenFried greatly enjoyed the tractor pull and Wild West Show.   They both greatly enjoyed the bounce houses.  Punk got to ride a pony.  We had great ‘seats’ for the fireworks by parking the Polaris at Mid-America Enterprises.  But darn those mosquitos.

The highlight of Sunday was the parade.  It lasted 1.5 hours.  The kids and I only sat through 1/2 of it (and they still had 2 huge bags full of candy) and jumped on the cherry antique Farmall tractors with BigD, BrotherC, and Big Grandpa.  We helped throw out candy and trinkets.  BigD, Punk and I were on the first tractor as we passed the announcer’s stand.  The announcer was commenting on what a cool name my step-dad has (think male western-film star of the 50’s, like High Noon!) thinking BigD was GC.  We pointed out that GC was a couple of tractors behind.  The announcer continued reading about the Wheatland BigD was driving, point out there were only 800 of the tractors made.  He stops and says “Man, you must be in really good with the GC.  Not only does he let you marry his daughter, he lets you drive one of only 800 tractors ever made.”

It was great fun and wonderful memories for the kids.   Great show Bancroft Nebraska.   Thanks for all the hard work.  If you are very curious, here is the link:  And I’ll be posting pics under the Q125 page.
