Back To School

I think most little kiddos are back to school now (we were a little late in our district this year.)  Here is a fun memory page to help record the moments of the first day back to school.  Just click the link below, print out the page image, fill it in, and there you go!

Back To School Memory Book Page

Don’t forget, ElementalBaby offers great School Year Memory Books.  We’ll take your scanned image of your kiddo’s genius moments and masterful artwork, lay the images out in digital scrapbook format, and print them in a bound book for you.

Adult Playground

Posted on August 30, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments | Tags: |

Yesterday we went to BigD’s company picnic at a nearby lake.  They have a HUGE playground there.  At one point or another, any parent who brought a kid was on the play ground.  Not just pushing or watching, but going down a slide, across the monkey bars, etc.  I showed Punk how to hang upside down while locking your legs on the bar.  And it was fun.

I think they should make adult-sized playgrounds and we should get a recess every day.  I’m guessing we’d have lower blood pressure, lower weight, and be a little happier overall.

Rewarding Bad Behavior

Posted on August 25, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: |

We all know, whether from dog training class or kid training (oops, I mean parenting) class — the behaviors you reward will be repeated.   I realized the other night that BigD and I are in trouble, especially when it comes to eating dinner.  We keep telling the kids if they learn proper dinner etiquette, we’ll take them out for a nice dinner.  I think we’re about 7 years away.

We’ll start with Saturday night.  Punk’s job is handing out napkins for everyone.  She knows everyone has a napkin.  At one moment she has food on her fingers …. and wipes them on her shirt.   BigD and I look at each other  and he says “she’s going to be more of a boy than ChickenFried.”   That was it.  Nothing else said to Punk.  Who cares – it was dinner and she was going to be putting her shirt in the laundry in a couple of hours anyway.

Move to Sunday dinner.  It didn’t even hit me until about half way through the meal that neither child was wearing a shirt.   They were sitting across from me.  I’d looked at them many times, but apparently going shirtless around here (for the children anyway) has become so commonplace that I didn’t notice.   They didn’t put shirts on until – well, the next morning.   The upside is no one wiped their dirty fingers on their shirts.

Monday dinner.  BigD says something ChickenFried thinks he might be interested in so he says “what” ….. quickly followed by a loudly and perfectly burped “what?”  We couldn’t help ourselves.  We laughed.  It was funny.  I didn’t know he could do that yet.  I’m so proud.

Dinner –

A Sad View

Posted on August 23, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments |

IMG_4235A few weeks ago BigD determined that Pine Wilt had struck our little “Pine Corner,” as we lovingly referred to it.   There’s nothing you can do to kill the bugs – you just have to cut down the infected trees and burn them.  So BigD got to work and started cutting trees down.

You can see where the beetles went into the trees.  It’s amazing how evenly spaced and perfectly linear their entrance holes are.

If my count is correct, nine nice size pine trees came down and were burned.  We’re very hopeful the remaining trees (which are supposedly more resistant) don’t become infected.

Saturday 9 – I Ran

Posted on August 22, 2009. Filed under: Meme Fun | Tags: , |

1. When’s the last time you ran?

Today – I ended up being the coach of ChickenFried’s soccer team and this am was our first practice.  I ended up more sweaty than the kids.

2. Do your jeans have rips, tears, and holes in them?

No – not since the 80’s.

3. What are you dreading right now?

Paying our property taxes.  They jacked it up on us.  I’m sure they have a “target” number to hit and spread it out where they can so we got part of the love.

4. Do you like Mexican food?

I like ‘fake’ Mexican food — the kind that is based loosely on Mexican, but then adds a lot of cheese.

5. Favorite ice cream?

Ice cream.

6. When was your last doctor’s visit?

? No clue.

7. Do you get the full 8 hours of sleep a night?

Amazingly, I did last night.

8. How many pets do you have?

Two – a dog and a cat.  I don’t count the fish in the kids room.  If you can’t pet it, it’s not a pet.

9. “First Loves Are Never Over;” is this true for you?

No.  As I look back, mine were pretty stupid.

Wild Kingdom Experience

Posted on August 19, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments | Tags: , , , , |

wild kingdomDuring my recent trip to a conference in Vegas I had the great fortune to get an up close and personal Wild Kingdom moment.   Here I am with Peter Gros, the co-host during Jim Fowler’s reign, and now main host of the updated Wild Kingdom.

Peter is holding a Bateleur Eagle, which are native to Africa.  The bird decided to flap the precise moment the photo was taken …. hence my apprehensive glance it’s direction.  It is pretty large — and the talons are huge.

I have now met two Wild Kingdom hosts.  I met Jim Fowler at an airport.  My boss at the time had worked with him on some projects at Mutual of Omaha.   He was very kind and talked with us for quite a while.

Now, I just need to meet Jeff Corwin and I’ll have hit the Animal Planet trifecta!

Chasing Picture Perfection – I got an A+!

Posted on August 17, 2009. Filed under: Elemental Memories, Mommy Moments | Tags: , , |

Stacie, at Chasing Picture Perfection, awarded me the A+ for the photo assignment of ‘creative framing.’

When I initially saw Stacie’s assignment I thought I didn’t have a chance.  I had seen a couple of her examples and they were so creative and different.

But, I followed Stacies’ advise and took my camera with me up to our neighbor’s pool, even though I’d already gotten shots of the kids in the pool.  Then I noticed ChickenFried looking through the tube and inspiration struck.

I did crop in very close on the shot – this isn’t cropped after the fact.  I just used the standard presets on my Canon DSLR.  The one tip I will give is that I blocked the extra sunlight coming in my eyepiece viewfinder.  If you have too much light coming in your eyepiece, the camera thinks the picture is brighter and the photo turns out too dark to use.  But, if you block the light (I just cupped my left hand over my eyebrow), it allows the lens and aperature to adjust correctly.

I also like the fact that the tube isn’t perfectly centered.   I think it gives the photo more interest that if it was a perfect circle.

Thanks again to Stacie for the fun photo assignments … and yum, Starbucks!   I encourage everyone who enjoys taking pics to check out her website.  I love her new feature: Free Photo Tips Card Download.  They are great little cards you can print off and refer to quickly rather than flipping through your 90-page camera reference book.

How Much Longer?

Posted on August 16, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: |

This is the adult version of “are we there yet?”  And I do mean, is it time for school to start again?  By my kid-o-meter, it should have started a week ago.  That’s about the time ChickenFried got bored with everything in his life …. especially his sister.  Those two have been at each other in a way that would make a classic scene in a Judd Apatow movie about parents who find themselves almost middle-age with two kids that are irritating each other.

I tried to break things up a bit by taking them into the playground at the school this afternoon.  Like a nice mom, I packed up their bikes, wheeled them down the hill at the school and sat back to watch them play.  For all of 20 minutes.  Then ChickenFried was tired and hungry and ready to go.  Even Lego Star Wars isn’t holding his attention like it used to.  Another sign, he finished a 3rd-4th grade math book in a week….he’s going into 2nd grade.  This isn’t a brag about his intelligence –  These are all signs that it is time to go back to school.

Alas, I wish I could say school starts Tuesday, but we have to wait another 1.5 weeks.   I need to get creative about how we are going to spend the next couple of weeks …. and thank God they’ll be at the babysitters part of that time!!!  Maybe my plan should be to get a babysitter at night — could I afford that?  My sanity is saying I need to!

What World Am I Living In?

Posted on August 13, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments |

Our life is full of craziness right now.  I feel like we are in a pattern of what should be simple is extremely difficult.

Let’s take my trip to the FedEx store as an example.  I need to ship 1 package – simple, right?  It’s 2:15 pm … the parking lot is full.  Overflowing to be more precise.  FedEx shares the little strip with Starbucks.  Apparently everyone needed Starbucks at 2:15 on Wednesday.  I try to drive around the building but as I get to the back I realize the “drive” at the back is actually the Starbucks drive through.  I go to back up, but someone has pulled right up on my butt and is completely ignoring the fact that I need to back up 4 feet to turn.  So, I get the pleasure of going through the Starbucks drive-through and saying “nothing – thanks.”  Had I been thinking a bit faster, I would have ordered one of everything and charged it to the idiot behind me.

Inside FedEx, the employees are so helpful — not.  I seriously had to wait for 5 minutes to get their attention (there were 7 of them behind the counter and no other customers waiting) — all I wanted was to borrow a pen.  While checking out I saw sticky note pad that pretty well summed up the last few weeks:

“I feel like I’m parallel parking in a diagonal world.”
