Bittersweet

ChickenFried and BigD had planted pumpkins behind the house a few years ago when ChickenFried was about 3 … but a little too late to have any for Halloween.  BigD didn’t want ChickenFried to be disappointed, so he bought a few pumpkins and placed them under the plants.  That night he took ChickenFried down to “pick the pumpkins.”  I had video recorded this with a commentary voice-over explaining what we had done.

ChickenFried got an MP3/video player for Christmas, so I loaded a few of the home videos, including this one, on his player.  When he got to that part of the video I heard him say “awwwwww” in a sad little voice.  Then he busted out laughing.   He knew he had been tricked and was a little sad they weren’t really his pumpkins, but thought it was absolutely hilarious we had tricked him.

Being Comfy

Posted on December 24, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: , |

Punk and I were sitting playing a game when she snuggled in close.  With each second she seemed to sink in a little bit more until she was just where she wanted to be.  Then she said “Mommy, you make me comfy.”  Then my heart felt all comfy.

May you have someone who makes you comfy to snuggle up with this holiday season!!!

Linus and Lucy

My Mom sent Punk the cutest Christmas card.  It’s a scene from the Peanuts holiday special and when you push a button lights on the tree blink and it plays the theme song, “Linus and Lucy.”  I just can’t help myself – when I hear that song, I am compelled to do the Peanuts dance.  Who’s with me????!!!!

Oh – Darn It

ChickenFried and Punk got to open a holiday gift early from their Aunt and Uncle.  Part of the gift happened to be $15 – a $10 and a $5 to be specific.  ChickenFried, as I believe I’ve mentioned before is very savy when it comes to money so he announced “I got $15” very proudly.  Punk takes her two bills out and says “Oh darn it – I only got 2.”

The Little Gift

Posted on December 16, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: , , |

Today was Miss Punk’s 4th Birthday.  As we settled down to watch her open gifts, she was looking over each one deciding which to open first.  ChickenFried was trying to convince her it should be his (the biggest).  Punk, however, opted for a small, little box (a pony necklace).

BigD looked at me and said, “that proves it.  Women are born to go for the small box first.”  I didn’t have a rebuttal.

I was so hungry……

Posted on December 13, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: |

The dogs have been enjoying the good life inside with the frigid temps and belly-deep snow.  But they are developing some bad habits, like begging when someone has food.

Punk was enjoying some cheetos on the couch (with two slobbering audience members) when she started screaming.  I ran over to see what was going on and ChickenFried offered that one of the dogs bit Punk’s finger.  Both dogs looked pretty guilty, so I said, ‘did the dog bite your finger?’  She was crying and talking uninteligibly so I told her to slow down and asked her again if a dog bit her finger.  She finally got out, “no …… I did.”  ChickenFried and I couldn’t help ourselves.  We busted out laughing.   And she was ok, and did finish her cheetos with no further incident.

The Cookie Thief

Posted on December 10, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: , , |

My schtick is making cookies for the holidays.  For the family, friends, neighbors, and whomever else happens to show up!  That means I’ve been baking for a couple of weekends already.   I tell the “boys” they can taste-test the cookies and let me know if they are good.  But slowly, I’ve been noticing more cookies are missing than the one or two testers.   I ruled out the dogs and Big D, so it was one, or both children.  And, since Katy hasn’t been that anxious to test the cookies, it really came down to ChickenFried.   I charged him with the crime, and the silly smile on his face told me he was completely guilty.  He then took a move from BigD’s playbook and said, “but they were so good I had to have more.”  Nice compliment!  At least he was enjoying them, and that is why I bake them after all.

Penny’s or Pennies?

Posted on December 9, 2009. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing | Tags: , |

This past weekend we needed to run an errand that included a stop at JC Penny’s.  Prior to leaving the house, Punk had found a penny on the ground.  She was adamant that she had to take the penny to the store with her to spend.  I kept trying to tell her she really wouldn’t be able to buy anything with her penny, but she insisted.  On the way there she kept talking about her penny and the store.   I again point out she won’t be able to buy anything.  Finally she explains, “but mommy, we’re going to the pennies store.”

Of course.  It was so obvious after she said it, but I was in such a rush I didn’t give it a thought.  It’s easy to do, this time of year especially.  But I’m really going to try and slow down a bit and pay attention to the kids so I don’t miss those special moments.
