What did ChickenFried learn this weekend?

Posted on September 12, 2010. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing |

BigD has a very large bird book.  ChickenFried got it out and looked up Turkey Vultures.

They eat carrion – “Dad, what’s that?”  “dead things.”

“They also eat stillborn animals and the afterbirth.  What’s stillborn?”   I turn and give a look.  Big D responds – “animals that are born dead.  Like at K’s farm, a calf can be dead when it comes out of it’s mommy.”   ….. whew – no question about ‘what’s afterbirth.’

“They are monogamous and breed with their partner.  What’s that mean?”   I turn, and give another look …. really it’s a look of amusement.  I want to see how BigD is going to recover from this.

“Breed means they make more bird babies.  monogamous means they only have one partner.  Like I have Mommy.  You don’t see me going out and finding other partners.”

“Tiger Woods did.”  Yes – he did just say that.  Yes – BigD and I both laughed.

Where Have I Been

Posted on September 11, 2010. Filed under: Mommy Moments, The Parenting Thing |

I was listening to the radio on the way to work this week.  A Mom from a nearby town had called in and was saying that the school voted to change the recess schedule so that 3rd graders only get 1 recess.  I was the idiot talking to the radio in the car saying how ridiculous that is.  That 3rd graders should have at least 2 recess times and if I lived there I would have complained.

That night I say to ChickenFried (now in 3rd grade) that kids in 3rd grade in the other town only get 1 recess.  He looks at me like I am a total idiot and says “Mom – I only get 1 recess.”  Silence.  “You do?”  “Yeah” (big implied “duh”).

Now, I would have known this had I looked at the schedule sent home like the second day of school.   This is just par for the course this school year.   Examples:

Day 2 – I send ChickenFried to school in a tank top.  Apparently tank tops aren’t allowed in the new school.  This is clearly stated in the handbook sent home Day 1.  Ooops.

Day 8 – I send a note that ChickenFried needs to ride a different bus today.  The problem is that I put the wrong date on the note.  Seriously – his teacher has to think I am the biggest loser parent ever.

Have I mentioned before that we are soooooooo in trouble when it comes to Punk?

Tonight the kiddos were taking a bath together and ChickenFried had his head down pouring water over his head to rinse out the soap.  He said to Punk “are all the bubbles gone?”   Punk looked at me with this evil little grin and said “no, you have lots more” even though his hair was perfectly rinsed.  She didn’t even hesitate to torture her brother.
